Auto Lift Fit & Safety: Nine Olympic Equipment Video Answers

Olympic Equipment editorial cover comparing symmetric and asymmetric lifts: vehicle position, arm reach and door access.

Choose a video below for a focused answer about lift fit, vehicle access, arm restraints, approved adapters and bridge-jack capacity. Each full-length video includes visible captions and its own subject-specific cover.

What is the difference between symmetric and asymmetric two-post lifts?

These terms describe aspects of the lift’s arm arrangement and intended vehicle positioning. They can affect how a compatible vehicle sits between the columns and how much door-opening room is available. They do not establish that every car or truck will fit. Check the exact model’s permitted configurations, arm reach, load distribution and vehicle instructions. Have Olympic compare those requirements with the vehicles you plan to service.

How much door-opening room will a two-post lift give me?

Door access depends on the vehicle’s width and door shape, the lift’s column arrangement and the permitted vehicle position. An asymmetric label alone does not guarantee unrestricted door opening. Compare the dimension drawing with the actual car and surrounding walls or benches. Keep the required lift clearances and operating instructions intact. Plan the bay around the vehicles you use most and ask Olympic to review the layout.

Why are the arm locks on a two-post lift important?

Arm restraints help keep the lifting arms in their required positions as part of the lift’s designed safety system. They must function and engage as the specific manual requires. Before use, inspect the restraints and confirm the arms and adapters are correctly positioned at approved vehicle lifting points. If a restraint does not work properly, remove the lift from service and contact qualified support. Never bypass it to finish a job.

Can I use wood blocks instead of proper lift adapters?

No. Improvised wood blocks or homemade adapters are not a substitute for the manufacturer-approved lift accessories. They may slip, fail or create an unstable contact arrangement. Use the correct pads and adapters for the exact lift and the vehicle’s approved lifting points. If you cannot reach those points with approved equipment, stop and obtain a suitable lift or accessory. Ask Olympic to identify the correct setup before you raise the vehicle.

Can I work under a lift without lowering it onto its locks?

Follow the exact lift manual’s working-position and mechanical-lock procedure before entering the work area. Do not rely on hydraulic pressure alone where the manufacturer requires the lift to rest on its locks. Confirm the safety systems engage correctly and keep the area clear during movement. If the locks do not function as specified, take the lift out of service. Have qualified service personnel resolve the problem before using it again.

What should I check before lifting an unfamiliar vehicle?

Verify its operating weight, center of gravity and manufacturer-approved lifting points. Confirm the lift’s capacity, component limits, arm reach, required adapters and clearance. Inspect the lift and follow the manual’s positioning and stability checks before continuing. A familiar vehicle shape does not prove the same lifting setup is appropriate. If the documentation or contact points are uncertain, pause and get the correct information before proceeding.

Can I lift a car with only some of a two-post lift’s arms?

Use the lift only in the complete support configuration its manufacturer specifies for the vehicle. Do not omit arms or improvise an uneven support arrangement because a particular repair is inconvenient. Every required adapter must contact the approved location and the load must meet the manual’s distribution limits. If the correct configuration cannot be achieved, use suitable equipment for the job. Ask qualified support before attempting an unusual application.

What if a lift arm cannot reach the approved lifting point?

Stop and verify the vehicle information, arm configuration, permitted positioning and approved adapter options. Do not move the contact pad onto a convenient but unapproved underbody component. Extra blocks or homemade extensions do not solve an incompatible setup. If the model cannot reach correctly within its limits, select an appropriate lift or manufacturer-approved solution. Send Olympic the exact vehicle and lift details so the fit can be reviewed.

What capacity bridge jack do I need for a four-post lift?

A bridge jack must suit the load it actually supports, its permitted distribution and the vehicle’s approved lifting points. Its rating is separate from the main lift’s total capacity. Verify physical fit, approved compatibility and the intended front- or rear-axle operation in both manuals. Two jack ratings cannot simply be added to approve any vehicle. Have Olympic match the jack and lift to the actual application before ordering.
